چکیده

This research proposes a generalized product planning and forecasting model to be used in product development projects in avionics industry. The model is based on a specific application that focuses on cockpit weather information systems (CWIS), a new group of aviation products. CWIS are information systems located in the aircraft cockpit providing weather information to the pilot via data link communication with the ground. This product group demonstrates typical characteristics of the avionics industry, hence constitutes a rich application area for developing and testing a decision model. To achieve the specific requirements of the industry, a number of aggregate diffusion models are examined. Weather information has significant implications for aviation system safety and there is general agreement that improved cockpit weather information can reduce accidents and injuries. To provide improved weather information to users in the national airspace system (NAS), National Aeronautics and Space Administration (NASA) created the Aviation Weather Information project (AWIN), the sponsor of this research. In the light of the general context of this program, this study is founded on previous studies in CWIS development including the rate of the customer demand for these products, and desired product characteristics. It investigates various cockpit weather products, and based on their selected characteristics, it proposes a product planning and forecasting model combining conjoint analysis and an extension of the Bass model based on CWIS data. This study suggests that a similar approach can be used for new product planning and decision making in the avionics market, which can predict the penetration of similar future advanced technologies.

Forecasting and Proactive Management of Obsolescence for Sustainment- Dominated Systems

Many technologies have life cycles that are shorter than the life cycle of the product they are in. Life cycle mismatches caused by the obsolescence of technology (and particularly the obsolescence of electronic parts) results in high sustainment costs for long field life systems, e.g., avionics and military systems. This paper describes a new methodology for forecasting electronic part obsoles...

Bi-product inventory planning in a three-echelon supply chain with backordering, Poisson demand, and limited warehouse space

In this paper, we apply continuous review (S-1, S) policy for inventory control in a three-echelon supply chain (SC) including r identical retailers, a central warehouse with limited storage space, and two independent manufacturing plants which offer two kinds of product to the customer. The warehouse of the model follows (M/M/1) queue model where customer demands follow a Poisson probabilit...

A value analysis of new product development factors.in a Developed and Developing Country (Case Study)

New product development (NPD) is described in the literature as the transformation of a market opportunity into a product available for sale. In the automotive industry, within the context of ISO/TS16949:2002 (the automotive quality management system international standard),  these related to the product realization process (PRP) which consists of Three main phases such as planning, Implem...

Forecasting Capital Investment for Fixed-Telephony Network Switching Equipment in Tandem with NGN Migration Using Cobb-Douglas Model

This paper tries to estimate the capital investment required for the fixed-telephony network switching equipment as demanded by the fourth national development plan. As a first step, the Cobb-Douglas model is used as a successful demand forecasting model to estimate the demand over the target years. Then, an architectural plan is developed for the fixed-telephony switching network that takes in...

Building a Multi-Objective Model for Multi-Product Multi-Period Production Planning with Controllable Processing Times: A Real Case Problem

Model building is a fragile and complex process especially in the context of real cases. Each real case problem has its own characteristics with new concepts and conditions. A correct model should have some essential characteristics such as: being compatible with real conditions, being of sufficient accuracy, being logically traceable and etc. This paper discusses how to build an efficient mode...
